Himan Iman’s story with CIWA spans nearly a decade, showcasing a remarkable journey of personal and professional growth. “I have been employed by CIWA for 9 and half years,” Himan shares. Her path began as a client in the Healthy Families Program, evolving through various roles including volunteer, language tutor, and LINC instructor. “I taught different CLB levels in LINC for almost 6 years,” she recalls. In 2022, Himan took on the role of liaison for LINC and Pebbles in the Sand Program, which she held for two years. Her dedication and expertise led to her current position as the Pebbles in the Sand Program Coordinator in 2024.

Himan’s journey to Canada began in 2013 when she migrated from Eritrea, a small country in the Horn of Africa. “We arrived on a cold winter day in Manitoba, marking the beginning of a new chapter in our lives,” she recalls. The initial hurdles included adjusting to the cold climate, navigating an unfamiliar country, and adapting to a new culture. After relocating to Alberta, Himan was introduced to CIWA through the Healthy Families Program. “Grateful for the support I received, I felt a deep desire to volunteer at the organization. With a Teaching background, I was particularly drawn to volunteer in the LINC program, recognizing the vital role language plays in settlement and integration.”

Passion Beyond Work
Himan speaks Tigrinya, Amharic, and English. She shares a fun phrase in Tigrinya: “Akli waga bekli,” meaning “Patience is worth a Mule!” She explains, “In the olden days owning a mule was a sign of wealth. But the phrase indicates that having patience is worth as much as owning material wealth.”
Outside of her professional life, Himan has a passion for singing. “I have recorded my first gospel album in 2019 and my second one is coming,” she shares excitedly. This artistic pursuit showcases another dimension of Himan’s talents and her commitment to personal growth and expression.
